India And Italy Deepen Strategic Cooperation

Relations between India and Italy have entered a new phase of strategic cooperation as both nations expand collaboration across trade, technology, defence, energy and digital infrastructure.

The growing partnership reflects a broader geopolitical shift where countries are increasingly focusing on strategic alliances to strengthen economic resilience, innovation and global competitiveness.

Over the past few years, India and Italy have significantly strengthened political and institutional engagement, transforming their bilateral relationship from traditional diplomatic ties into a deeper strategic partnership based on democratic values, innovation and economic cooperation.

Trade And Investment Partnership Expanding Rapidly

One of the key pillars of the India-Italy partnership remains trade and industrial collaboration.

Both countries are aiming to significantly increase bilateral trade and investment flows as the proposed European Union-India Free Trade Agreement progresses.

The two nations are targeting trade worth more than €20 billion by 2029, focusing on sectors such as defence, aerospace, automotive components, machinery, pharmaceuticals, chemicals, clean technologies, textiles, tourism and agri-food industries.

Italian manufacturing excellence and industrial design are increasingly being positioned as complementary to India’s large-scale manufacturing ambitions under initiatives such as “Make in India.”

At the same time, Indian companies continue expanding their footprint in Italy while Italian firms are increasing investments in India across industrial and consumer sectors.

AI, Technology And Innovation Become Central Focus

Technology and innovation are emerging as the core drivers of the India-Italy partnership.

Both countries are strengthening cooperation across artificial intelligence, quantum computing, advanced manufacturing, critical minerals and digital infrastructure.

India’s rapidly growing startup ecosystem, which includes more than 100 unicorns and over 200,000 startups, combined with Italy’s industrial and engineering capabilities, is creating new opportunities for long-term collaboration.

The partnership also focuses heavily on responsible and human-centric AI development.

India’s vision of “MANAV” placing humans at the centre of technology aligns with Italy’s humanist and ethical approach toward AI governance and digital rights.

Both countries are increasingly positioning AI as a tool for inclusive development, especially for emerging economies and countries across the Global South.

Defence, Energy And Space Cooperation Strengthen

India and Italy are also expanding collaboration in defence, maritime security, cybersecurity and strategic technologies as global geopolitical tensions continue to rise.

The two nations are working together to strengthen critical trade routes and improve resilience against threats such as terrorism, cybercrime and transnational criminal networks.

Energy cooperation has also emerged as a major focus area. Both countries are collaborating on renewable energy, hydrogen technologies, smart grids and resilient energy infrastructure.

India’s ambitions to become a global green hydrogen hub complement Italy’s advanced renewable energy technology capabilities and its strategic role within Europe’s energy ecosystem.

In addition, India and Italy are strengthening cooperation in the space sector, combining India’s advancements in satellite technology and space exploration with Italy’s aerospace engineering expertise.

Indo-Mediterranean Corridor Gains Strategic Importance

The partnership is increasingly being shaped around the concept of the Indo-Mediterranean

an interconnected strategic corridor linking the Indo-Pacific and Mediterranean regions through trade, energy, technology and connectivity.

In this context, the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC) is emerging as a major strategic initiative connecting India, the Middle East and Europe through transport, digital infrastructure and supply chains.

As global power dynamics continue evolving, India and Italy appear increasingly aligned in building a long-term strategic partnership focused on economic growth, technological leadership and democratic cooperation in the emerging global order.
