Reliance Retail Plans Leadership Transition At AJIO
AJIO is set to appoint former Coupang executive Sandeep Karwa as the new chief executive officer of the fashion ecommerce platform, according to multiple sources familiar with the development.
The move comes as Reliance Retail intensifies its focus on strengthening its digital fashion and lifestyle business amid growing competition in India’s ecommerce market.
Sources indicated that current AJIO CEO Vineeth Nair is expected to transition into a broader strategic role within Reliance Retail’s fashion vertical.
According to people aware of the matter, Nair may oversee larger responsibilities across Reliance Retail’s fashion and lifestyle ecosystem, including areas connected to Reliance Brands.
While Sandeep Karwa is expected to lead AJIO’s day-to-day operations, Vineeth Nair is likely to remain associated with the platform at a strategic level.
Sandeep Karwa Brings Deep Ecommerce And Retail Experience
Industry sources said Karwa has already been leading AJIO operations informally over the past few weeks ahead of the formal leadership transition.
Karwa most recently served as the country head for Taiwan at Coupang, one of Asia’s largest ecommerce companies known for its technology-driven retail and logistics operations.
Before joining Coupang, Karwa spent nearly 11 years at Flipkart, where he held several leadership positions across business and growth verticals.
In his final role at Flipkart, he served as vice president of the company’s advertising business platform, helping scale monetisation and digital commerce initiatives.
Apart from his ecommerce experience, Karwa has also served on the boards of Walmart India, Wildcraft India and Arvind Fashions.
Industry experts believe his experience across ecommerce operations, advertising technology and retail strategy could help AJIO strengthen customer acquisition, brand partnerships and platform growth.
AJIO Faces Intensifying Competition In Fashion Ecommerce
AJIO remains one of Reliance Retail’s most important digital commerce platforms and plays a key role in the company’s broader fashion and lifestyle ambitions.
The platform currently houses a mix of private labels, mass-premium brands and international fashion partnerships catering to India’s rapidly growing online fashion consumer base.
However, competition in the fashion ecommerce sector has intensified significantly over the past few years with strong rivals including Myntra, Nykaa Fashion, Tata CLiQ Fashion and several fast-fashion-focused startups aggressively expanding market share.
Reliance Retail has been investing heavily across omnichannel retail, fashion technology, premium brands and digital commerce infrastructure to strengthen its position in the sector.
Leadership Change Reflects Reliance’s Long-Term Fashion Strategy
The leadership reshuffle is being viewed as part of Reliance Retail’s larger strategy to consolidate and scale its fashion and lifestyle ecosystem across both online and offline channels.
Analysts believe Vineeth Nair’s expected transition into a broader strategic role indicates Reliance’s intention to integrate AJIO more closely with its wider fashion portfolio and premium retail operations.
At the same time, Karwa’s appointment signals a stronger operational and growth-focused approach as Reliance Retail prepares for the next phase of competition in India’s rapidly evolving digital fashion market.
