Scooter Sales Grow Faster Than Motorcycles in Q1 FY27

Scooter Segment Grows 31% in Q1 FY27, Outperforming Motorcycles Amid Changing Consumer Preferences

India’s two-wheeler market is witnessing a notable shift as scooters continue to gain ground against motorcycles, a segment that has traditionally dominated domestic sales for decades.

According to the latest data released by the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM), domestic scooter sales surged 30.8% year-on-year during the first quarter of FY27, significantly outpacing the growth recorded by motorcycles.

The trend reflects changing consumer preferences, favourable tax policies, and rising electric vehicle (EV) adoption, particularly in urban markets.

Scooters Register Strongest Growth

During Q1 FY27, scooter sales increased to 2.179 million units, compared to 1.665 million units in the corresponding quarter last year.

Motorcycles continued to remain India’s largest two-wheeler category by volume, but their growth was comparatively slower. Sales rose 14% year-on-year, increasing from 2.903 million units to 3.309 million units.

The stronger momentum in scooters highlights the segment’s growing appeal among urban commuters, first-time buyers, women riders, and younger consumers.

GST Cut Continues to Support Demand

SIAM attributed the faster growth in scooter sales partly to the GST rate reduction announced last year.

According to the industry body, the tax cut created positive momentum for the segment, helping improve affordability and boosting consumer demand.

“The growth in the scooter segment was higher compared to motorcycles in two-wheelers in Q1FY27, and the segment continued with the momentum created due to reduced GST,” SIAM said.

Lower ownership costs have encouraged more buyers to consider scooters as a practical alternative for daily commuting.

EV Boom Accelerating Scooter Adoption

The rapid expansion of India’s electric vehicle ecosystem has also played an important role in strengthening scooter demand.

Most electric two-wheelers launched in recent years have been scooters, with manufacturers including TVS Motor, Bajaj Auto, Ather Energy, Ola Electric, Hero MotoCorp, Greaves Electric Mobility, River Mobility, and BGauss expanding their portfolios aggressively.

Improving charging infrastructure, longer driving ranges, connected features, and lower running costs have made electric scooters increasingly attractive for urban consumers.

Changing Consumer Preferences

While motorcycles continue to dominate rural and long-distance mobility due to their fuel efficiency, durability, and affordability, consumer preferences in cities are gradually evolving.

Scooters are increasingly being chosen for:

  • Daily urban commuting
  • Ease of riding
  • Automatic transmission
  • Better convenience in traffic
  • Family-friendly design
  • Growing availability of electric variants

The combination of convenience and technological improvements has helped scooters expand their share within India’s two-wheeler market.

Market Dynamics Continue to Evolve

Although motorcycles still account for the highest overall sales volumes, the faster growth of scooters indicates a structural shift in consumer demand.

Industry observers expect this trend to continue as EV adoption accelerates, urban mobility patterns evolve, and manufacturers introduce more connected and feature-rich scooters across price segments.

With supportive government policies, increasing electrification, and changing buying behaviour, the scooter segment is emerging as one of the fastest-growing categories in India’s automotive market.
