How Did Paytm Deliver Strong Profit Growth in the First Quarter of FY27?
Fintech major One97 Communications, the parent company of Paytm, reported a robust start to FY27, posting a 79% year-on-year increase in net profit for the first quarter. The company reported a profit of ₹220 crore for Q1 FY27, supported by strong growth in payment services, financial services distribution, and marketing revenues.
According to its unaudited financial results filed with the National Stock Exchange (NSE), Paytm’s revenue from operations increased 27.6% year-on-year to ₹2,448 crore in Q1 FY27, compared to ₹1,918 crore in the corresponding quarter last year.
The performance follows Paytm’s return to full-year profitability in FY26 and signals continued momentum across its core fintech business.
Payments Business Continues to Drive Growth
Payment services remained Paytm’s largest revenue contributor during the quarter.
Revenue from payment services grew 32% year-on-year to ₹1,384 crore, accounting for more than 56% of the company’s operating revenue.
The company’s financial services distribution business generated ₹814 crore, while marketing services contributed ₹239 crore during the quarter.
Including ₹182 crore in non-operating income, Paytm’s total income reached ₹2,630 crore in Q1 FY27.
On a sequential basis, revenue also improved, rising 8% from ₹2,264 crore reported in Q4 FY26.
Expenses Rise Alongside Business Expansion
As transaction volumes increased, payment processing charges remained Paytm’s largest expense.
The company spent ₹794 crore on payment processing during the quarter, marking a 36% year-on-year increase and accounting for over one-third of total expenses.
Employee benefit expenses stood at ₹742 crore, up nearly 16% compared to the same period last year.
Meanwhile, marketing expenditure surged 69% year-on-year to ₹169 crore, reflecting the company’s continued investment in customer acquisition and business growth.
Software infrastructure, cloud services, communication costs, legal expenses, cashback programmes, and other operational costs pushed total expenditure to ₹2,383 crore, compared to ₹2,016 crore in Q1 FY26.
Profitability Improves Significantly
Despite higher operating expenses, Paytm delivered a substantial improvement in profitability.
The company reported a net profit of ₹220 crore, up from ₹123 crore in Q1 FY26, representing a 79% year-on-year increase.
The strong earnings indicate that Paytm has continued to improve operating leverage while expanding its payments and financial services businesses.
The results also reinforce the company’s transition from a high-growth fintech startup to a consistently profitable digital financial services platform.
Fresh ESOPs Announced
Alongside its quarterly results, Paytm announced a fresh Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP) grant.
According to a separate filing with the NSE, the company approved ESOPs covering nearly 15.42 lakh equity shares under its ESOP 2019 Scheme, with an estimated value of around ₹208 crore.
The ESOP allocation is aimed at attracting and retaining talent as the company continues to strengthen its technology and financial services ecosystem.
Paytm’s Market Position
Following the announcement of its quarterly earnings, Paytm’s shares closed at ₹1,348.50 on Monday.
At the closing price, the company commanded a market capitalisation of approximately ₹86,396 crore (around $9.09 billion).
With sustained revenue growth, improving profitability, and continued expansion across payments and financial services, Paytm remains one of India’s largest listed fintech companies.
What’s Next for Paytm?
Paytm’s strong Q1 FY27 performance reflects continued momentum across its core businesses, particularly digital payments and financial services distribution.
As the company focuses on expanding its merchant ecosystem, increasing financial product adoption, and improving operational efficiency, investors will closely monitor whether it can sustain profitability while maintaining growth.
The latest quarterly results indicate that Paytm has entered FY27 with solid financial momentum, positioning the company for another year of expansion in India’s rapidly evolving digital payments and fintech landscape.
