Hinduja Family Retains Position As UK’s Richest Family
The Hinduja Group has retained the top position on the UK’s wealth rankings for the fifth consecutive year, with the family’s estimated fortune rising to £38 billion, according to the 2026 edition of the Sunday Times Rich List.
The ranking marks a significant transition for the business empire following the death of patriarch Gopichand Hinduja, popularly known as Gopi Hinduja, in November 2025 at the age of 85.
Leadership of the London-based conglomerate has now shifted to brothers Sanjay Hinduja and Dheeraj Hinduja, who are leading the next generation of the family business.
Hinduja Group Operates Across Multiple Industries
The Hinduja Group currently operates across 38 countries with investments spanning mobility, banking and financial services, digital technology, energy, media, real estate, healthcare and specialty chemicals.
According to the Sunday Times, 62-year-old Sanjay Hinduja currently chairs Gulf Oil International, while Dheeraj Hinduja oversees Ashok Leyland.
Ashok Leyland reportedly witnessed a strong year amid India’s accelerating electric vehicle transition, with the company’s shares rising nearly 40% over the past year.
The report also highlighted steady growth at IndusInd Bank, with shares gaining around 14% during the same period.
Indian-Origin Billionaires Continue To Dominate UK Wealth Rankings
Another Indian-origin business family, brothers David Reuben and Simon Reuben, retained second place on the list with an estimated wealth of £27.97 billion.
The Reuben brothers are currently overseeing redevelopment projects involving iconic London properties such as Admiralty Arch and Cambridge House.
Among other Indian-origin billionaires, Prakash Lohia climbed to 28th place with wealth estimated at £6.44 billion, while Anil Agarwal slipped to 43rd position with a fortune of £3.85 billion.
UK Wealth Rankings Reflect Economic And Tax Shifts
The Sunday Times Rich List 2026 found that the UK’s 350 wealthiest individuals and families collectively hold a combined fortune of £784 billion, up 1.4% from last year.
However, the report also reflected broader economic challenges and changing tax policies in Britain. The minimum wealth required to enter the list dropped to £340 million, while several high-profile foreign billionaires, including Lakshmi Mittal, reportedly exited the rankings after relocating overseas.
