How Will ArcelorMittal Use AWS To Transform Its Operations?
Global steel giant ArcelorMittal has announced a strategic partnership with Amazon Web Services (AWS) to accelerate the automation of its worldwide operations through cloud computing, artificial intelligence (AI), and advanced data analytics.
The collaboration is aimed at modernising ArcelorMittal’s manufacturing processes by integrating AWS’s cloud infrastructure and AI capabilities directly into its production environments. The company expects the initiative to improve operational efficiency, enhance worker safety, strengthen asset reliability, and reduce energy consumption across its global facilities.
As one of the world’s largest integrated steel and mining companies, ArcelorMittal operates in more than 60 countries with primary steelmaking facilities across 14 nations. The partnership marks a significant step in the company’s broader digital transformation strategy.
What Technologies Will Be Deployed?
Under the agreement, ArcelorMittal will converge parts of its operational technology (OT) and information technology (IT) systems onto AWS’s secure cloud platform. This integration will allow the company to process real-time production data more efficiently and deploy AI-driven solutions closer to the manufacturing floor.
The steelmaker plans to leverage AWS services across industrial Internet of Things (IoT), machine learning, sensor-based monitoring, and cloud computing infrastructure.
By combining these technologies, ArcelorMittal aims to implement predictive maintenance systems capable of identifying equipment failures before they occur, helping reduce downtime and maintenance costs. The company will also deploy computer vision solutions for automated quality control, enabling real-time detection of defects during production.
Additionally, AI-powered process optimisation tools will help improve manufacturing efficiency, while digital twins virtual replicas of physical assets and production lines will allow engineers to simulate operations, test improvements, and monitor performance more effectively.
Why Is AI Becoming Important For Steel Manufacturing?
The steel industry is increasingly adopting AI and automation technologies to improve productivity, lower costs, and meet sustainability targets. Traditional manufacturing operations generate massive amounts of data from machines, sensors, and production systems. AI helps companies analyse this information in real time, enabling faster decision making and more efficient operations.
For ArcelorMittal, AI adoption is expected to support better energy management, reduce waste, and optimise production workflows. These improvements are particularly important as steelmakers face rising pressure to improve operational efficiency while reducing environmental impact.
The company believes that integrating AI directly into production environments will create a more resilient and responsive manufacturing ecosystem capable of adapting to changing market conditions and customer requirements.
Workforce Training At The Core Of Digital Transformation
Beyond technology deployment, the partnership also includes a significant workforce development component. AWS will design and deliver a comprehensive education and training programme for ArcelorMittal employees worldwide.
The initiative aims to equip workers with the skills needed to operate and manage AI-powered systems, cloud technologies, and digital manufacturing tools. As industrial companies increasingly embrace automation, workforce upskilling has become a critical factor in ensuring successful digital transformation.
According to ArcelorMittal Group CIO and CISO Nik Puri, the collaboration represents a major step toward building digitally enabled operations.
“By converging our operational and information technology on a single secure platform, we are moving to digitally enabled operations safer for our people, more reliable in output, and more sustainable by design. This is how we industrialise AI at scale across the steelmaking value chain,” Puri said.
A New Phase Of Industrial Automation
The partnership highlights how traditional industrial sectors are increasingly adopting advanced technologies once associated primarily with software and internet companies. As cloud computing, AI, and automation become integral to manufacturing, companies like ArcelorMittal are positioning themselves to improve competitiveness, operational resilience, and sustainability.
The collaboration with AWS could serve as a blueprint for the future of steel production, where intelligent factories, predictive systems, and data-driven decision making become central to industrial operations worldwide.
