PM Modi Surpasses Jawaharlal Nehru’s Record As Longest Continuously Serving Elected PM
The Union Cabinet on Wednesday passed a resolution congratulating Prime Minister Narendra Modi after he became the longest continuously serving elected Prime Minister in India’s history.
Cabinet ministers also gave Modi a standing ovation during the meeting, acknowledging the milestone achieved during his third consecutive term in office.
With this achievement, Modi has surpassed the record previously held by India’s first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, becoming the longest serving elected leader to hold the country’s highest executive office without interruption.
How Did PM Modi Reach This Milestone?
Narendra Modi first assumed office as Prime Minister on May 26, 2014, following the Bharatiya Janata Party’s decisive victory in the Lok Sabha elections.
He secured a second consecutive mandate in 2019, taking oath for his second term on May 30 that year. In the 2024 General Elections, Modi led the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) to another victory and began his third consecutive term on June 9, 2024.
Having remained continuously elected throughout this period, Modi has now set a new record in India’s democratic history.
Union Cabinet Passes Resolution Of Appreciation
The Union Cabinet formally recognised the achievement by passing a resolution praising Modi’s leadership and contribution to governance over the past decade.
The resolution highlighted the significance of the milestone and acknowledged the trust reposed in him by voters across three consecutive national elections.
Cabinet members also expressed their appreciation through a standing ovation, marking the occasion as a historic moment in India’s political journey.
A Landmark Moment In Indian Political History
Modi’s tenure has witnessed major policy initiatives, infrastructure expansion, digital transformation, welfare programmes, and economic reforms aimed at accelerating India’s growth trajectory.
The milestone reflects not only the longevity of his leadership but also the continued electoral support he has received since first taking office in 2014.
As India continues its development journey under his third term, the record adds another chapter to the country’s political history and highlights the evolving dynamics of democratic leadership in the world’s largest democracy.
