Can India’s First Hydrogen Train Transform the Future of Green Rail Transport?

India has taken a significant step toward sustainable transportation with the launch of its first hydrogen-powered train, the Namo Green Rail, which began operations on the Jind–Sonipat route in Haryana. The project marks the country’s entry into hydrogen-powered railway mobility and positions India among a select group of nations experimenting with clean-energy rail transportation.

The inauguration transformed the otherwise quiet town of Jind into the centre of national attention. Decorated roads, upgraded railway infrastructure, cultural performances, and heavy security arrangements welcomed visitors as hundreds gathered to witness the launch of what many locals affectionately called the “Paani Waali Train” because the train emits only water vapour during operation.

The launch also brought renewed attention to hydrogen technology as India accelerates its clean energy ambitions under the National Green Hydrogen Mission.

How Does India’s First Hydrogen Train Work?

Unlike conventional diesel locomotives, the hydrogen train carries a Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) fuel cell that functions as a compact onboard power plant.

Hydrogen stored inside high-pressure cylinders combines with oxygen from the atmosphere inside the fuel cell to generate electricity. This electricity powers the train’s traction motors, while the only emission produced during the process is water vapour, making the train virtually emission free during operation.

According to railway officials, the train stores approximately 220 kilograms of hydrogen in each driving power car, enabling two complete round trips on the 89 kilometre Jind–Sonipat route before refuelling.

The hydrogen refuelling process takes approximately four hours at a dedicated hydrogen facility capable of storing nearly 3,000 kilograms of hydrogen. Fuel is dispensed using specialised dispensers operating at a pressure of 350 bar.

What Makes India’s Hydrogen Train Unique?

Officials say the newly launched hydrogen train features 10 coaches, making it significantly larger than many existing hydrogen trains operating globally, which typically consist of three or four coaches.

Although the train currently operates at a maximum speed of 75 kmph, railway officials clarified that this limitation is due to the permitted speed of the existing railway track rather than the train itself.

According to train manager Nitin Parikh, the hydrogen-powered train is capable of reaching speeds of up to 110 kmph if operated on tracks designed for higher speeds.

The train has also been equipped with multiple international-standard safety systems. Since hydrogen is highly flammable, the onboard system continuously monitors for leaks and automatically shuts down the engine if any abnormality is detected.

Why Is This Project Important for India?

The launch represents more than just a technological achievement.

Hydrogen powered mobility is increasingly viewed as an important component of India’s long-term clean transportation strategy, particularly for railway routes where full electrification may not always be practical.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, while flagging off the train, said the government would continue investing in research aimed at reducing costs and improving efficiency before expanding hydrogen rail services across the country.

He also highlighted the long-term employment potential associated with hydrogen production, storage, and distribution infrastructure as India’s hydrogen economy develops.

Industry experts believe hydrogen trains could eventually complement India’s already extensive electrified railway network, particularly on specific regional routes.

Will Hydrogen Trains Replace Conventional Railways?

While the technology has demonstrated its feasibility, experts believe cost remains one of the biggest challenges.

Hydrogen-powered trains currently require substantial investment in:

  • Hydrogen production
  • Storage infrastructure
  • Refuelling stations
  • Safety systems
  • Maintenance facilities

According to Kuljit Singh, Partner and Infrastructure Leader at EY India, wider adoption will depend on reducing the cost of green hydrogen while simultaneously building supporting infrastructure across the country.

He noted that government incentives, combined with ongoing investments under India’s Green Hydrogen Mission, could gradually make hydrogen-powered transportation commercially viable.

As green hydrogen production scales up and prices decline, hydrogen trains may become an increasingly practical solution for sustainable mobility.

How Did Residents Respond to the Launch?

The launch generated excitement across Jind, where residents witnessed visible improvements in roads, railway infrastructure, and public facilities ahead of the inauguration.

Many locals expressed pride that their town had become the starting point of India’s hydrogen railway journey.

However, the inaugural journey also revealed a few operational challenges. Some passengers reported that the fresh coating on newly installed seats began peeling during the trip, leaving blue paint residue on their clothes.

Despite these minor issues, residents largely viewed the launch as a positive development that could bring greater investment, tourism, and economic activity to the region.

Many also expressed hope that additional infrastructure projects would further accelerate development in Jind.

What Lies Ahead for India’s Hydrogen Rail Programme?

The launch of the Namo Green Rail marks the beginning of India’s experimentation with hydrogen-powered railway technology rather than its large-scale rollout.

Railway authorities are expected to monitor operational performance, maintenance costs, safety systems, passenger experience, and fuel efficiency before considering wider deployment.

If hydrogen production costs decline and supporting infrastructure expands, the technology could become an important part of India’s clean mobility strategy alongside railway electrification.

For now, the Jind–Sonipat hydrogen train serves as a demonstration of India’s growing capabilities in green transportation and signals the country’s intent to participate in the global transition toward low-carbon mobility.
