Telegram Services Restored In India After Temporary Neet-UG Restrictions

Telegram Returns To Normal Operations After June 22 Restriction

Telegram’s messaging services have been fully restored across India after the temporary restrictions imposed ahead of the Neet-UG 2026 re-examination expired on June 22.

Users can once again access Telegram normally, and the app has returned to major app stores for download and installation. The restoration follows a short-term nationwide block ordered by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) as a precautionary measure to protect the integrity of the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (Undergraduate) re-examination.

Why Was Telegram Blocked?

Last week, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology temporarily restricted Telegram’s services across India based on recommendations linked to the Neet-UG re-examination process.

The move came amid ongoing concerns surrounding examination security after allegations of paper leaks and the circulation of misleading content related to the country’s largest medical entrance examination.

Authorities viewed Telegram as a potential channel for the rapid dissemination of exam related information and implemented the temporary restriction as a preventive measure ahead of the re-test.

The nationwide block remained in effect until June 22, covering the examination period and its immediate aftermath.

App Available Again On App Stores

Following the expiry of the restriction period, Telegram has resumed normal operations and is once again available for download through app marketplaces.

The restoration allows users across India to access chats, channels, groups, and messaging services without interruption.

The return of the platform is expected to benefit millions of users who rely on Telegram for communication, content sharing, educational communities, professional networking, and business activities.

Editing Feature Remains Disabled Until June 30

While messaging services have resumed, Telegram’s message editing feature will continue to remain unavailable in India until June 30.

The restriction on editing previously sent messages was introduced separately as part of efforts to curb the misuse of the feature for creating or modifying content after events had occurred.

Authorities had expressed concerns that edited messages could potentially be used to fabricate or manipulate evidence related to examination paper leaks and other sensitive matters.

As a result, users will be able to send and receive messages normally but will not be able to edit previously posted content until the temporary restriction expires.

Impact On Users

The temporary shutdown affected millions of Telegram users across the country, including students, educators, businesses, content creators, and community groups that depend on the platform for daily communication.

The restoration of services provides relief to users who experienced disruptions during the restriction period.

The incident also highlights the growing role of digital platforms in examination security and the increasing scrutiny of online communication channels during high-stakes national examinations.

Focus On Examination Integrity

The government’s action reflects broader efforts to strengthen safeguards around competitive examinations following recent controversies involving paper leaks and unauthorized sharing of exam-related content.

As authorities continue to investigate issues surrounding Neet-UG 2026, digital platforms are likely to remain under close observation whenever concerns arise regarding examination security and misinformation.

With Telegram services now restored and app access reinstated, users can resume normal usage, while the temporary restriction on message editing remains in place until the end of June.
