JioStar is preparing a major push into artificial intelligence-generated entertainment after the strong performance of its AI-created series Mahabharat: Ek Dharmayudh on the JioHotstar platform.

The company, a joint venture between Reliance Industries and The Walt Disney Company, is planning multiple new projects that will be written, animated, voiced, and edited almost entirely using AI technology.

According to people familiar with the development, the move is part of a broader effort to reduce production costs while accelerating content creation for India’s rapidly growing digital entertainment market.

Mahabharat Becomes A Turning Point

JioStar’s confidence in AI-generated storytelling follows the unexpected success of Mahabharat: Ek Dharmayudh, an AI-powered adaptation of the ancient Indian epic.

The 100-episode series retold the Kurukshetra War between the Kauravas and Pandavas and reportedly attracted 6.5 million views on its debut day in October, more than double the platform’s average performance for new releases.

The strong audience response convinced executives that AI-generated entertainment could become a commercially viable category for mainstream streaming platforms.

More AI Shows And Films In Development

Following the success of Mahabharat, JioStar is developing several additional AI-powered projects.

These include a television series titled Makaraj, a feature film Hanuman, and multiple short-format micro-dramas designed for mobile-first audiences.

The upcoming Hanuman project is expected to focus on the revered monkey god from the Ramayana, one of Hinduism’s most important epics.

The company believes AI can help produce high-volume content more efficiently while catering to India’s growing appetite for digital entertainment.

Hiring Drive To Support AI Expansion

To support its AI ambitions, JioStar plans to significantly expand its technology and creative workforce.

The company is reportedly looking to hire around 80 AI engineers and specialists who will focus on content generation, animation, visual effects, voice synthesis, and production workflows.

Earlier this year, JioStar appointed Stephan Bugaj, an award-winning screenwriter and content producer from the United States, to lead its generative AI content strategy.

His team is currently scouting for talent as the company builds its AI-focused production capabilities.

India And China Embrace AI Content Faster Than Hollywood

JioStar’s move reflects a broader trend across Asian entertainment markets.

Production houses in India and China are increasingly experimenting with AI-generated content to meet the growing demand for short-form and mobile-first video experiences.

The trend contrasts with Hollywood, where actors, writers, animators, and directors have expressed concerns that AI-generated productions could reduce opportunities for human creators and undermine creative originality.

Supporters argue that AI can dramatically lower production costs and improve efficiency, while critics fear it may replace creative jobs and reduce artistic quality.

Challenges Remain Despite Early Success

Despite the strong viewership numbers, JioStar’s AI-generated Mahabharat series also faced criticism from some viewers.
