Why Have India’s Leading Digital Commerce Companies Come Together?
A group of India’s largest digital commerce companies, including Amazon, Meesho, Eternal, Swiggy, and Zepto, have launched the Digital Commerce Coalition, a new industry-led body focused on advancing India’s rapidly growing digital commerce ecosystem.
The coalition aims to create a collaborative platform for policy engagement, research, industry discussions, and knowledge sharing while addressing key issues such as consumer trust, responsible innovation, economic participation, and long-term sustainable growth.
The launch comes at a time when digital commerce is becoming an increasingly important pillar of India’s economy, driven by rising internet penetration, rapid smartphone adoption, growing consumption in smaller cities, and the emergence of new business models across ecommerce and quick commerce.
What Will The Digital Commerce Coalition Focus On?
According to the coalition, the platform will serve as a forum where industry stakeholders can engage with policymakers and discuss challenges impacting the broader digital commerce sector.
The coalition plans to focus on improving customer experience, supporting entrepreneurs and small businesses, strengthening supply chains, and enhancing opportunities for delivery partners who form a critical part of the digital economy.
Industry participants believe that as ecommerce adoption expands beyond major metropolitan areas, collaborative efforts will become increasingly important to address sector-wide challenges and unlock future growth opportunities.
Who Will Manage The Coalition’s Operations?
Public policy consulting firm Koan Advisory Group has been appointed as the secretariat for the Digital Commerce Coalition.
The firm will support research initiatives, stakeholder engagement activities, policy discussions, and knowledge-sharing programs undertaken by the coalition.
The structure is designed to create a neutral platform where participating companies can collectively address industry priorities while engaging with regulators and policymakers.
Why Is Digital Commerce Becoming Increasingly Important?
India’s digital commerce sector has witnessed significant expansion over the past few years as consumers increasingly shift toward online purchasing across categories such as groceries, food delivery, fashion, electronics, and daily essentials.
Speaking on the development, Dr. Jaskiran Bedi noted that digital commerce is making consumption more convenient while simultaneously creating new opportunities for entrepreneurship and livelihood generation.
Similarly, Prachi Bhuchar highlighted how ecommerce platforms have enabled entrepreneurship, particularly among small businesses and underserved markets that previously had limited access to large consumer bases.
How Could The Coalition Benefit MSMEs?
One of the coalition’s major focus areas is expected to be improving access for micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs).
According to Rachit Ranjan, industry-wide collaboration can help address challenges related to MSME participation, supply-chain efficiency, and consumer trust.
With millions of small merchants increasingly using online platforms to reach customers, industry leaders believe coordinated efforts can help remove barriers and create a more inclusive digital economy.
Why Is Flipkart Missing From The Coalition?
A notable aspect of the launch is the absence of Flipkart, one of India’s largest ecommerce companies.
While the reasons remain unclear, Flipkart does not currently appear among the founding members of the coalition.
Despite this, the Digital Commerce Coalition brings together several major players across ecommerce, food delivery, and quick commerce, creating a significant industry voice for the sector.
How Is This Different From Existing Industry Bodies?
The Digital Commerce Coalition joins existing technology advocacy groups such as Internet and Mobile Association of India (IAMAI), Alliance of Digital India Foundation (ADIF), and Startup Policy Forum (SPF).
However, unlike these broader organizations, the new coalition is focused specifically on digital commerce and the unique challenges facing ecommerce, quick commerce, logistics, merchants, and digital marketplaces.
As India’s online commerce sector continues to expand, the coalition is expected to play a growing role in shaping discussions around regulation, innovation, entrepreneurship, and sustainable industry growth.
